Infrapipe Case Study
Patoka
Infrastructure That Connects. Proud Supplier Of 3200mm Large Diameter Culvert Pipe For Patoka’s Resilient Future
Overview
In the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle, significant damage was caused to infrastructure across Hawke’s Bay.
- One critical site was the Patoka culvert on Hendley Road, a vital access route for rural families and dairy operations, severely compromised during the storm.
- This culvert was one of many damaged across the region. For over two years, the road remained a narrow, temporary crossing, which raised serious concerns about safety, access, and resilience during future events.

Project Highlights
- Resilience-focused design: The replacement culvert is larger, stronger, and built to withstand future extreme weather events, embodying the principle of manaakitanga, caring for and protecting the community.
- Ecological care: A custom-designed fish ladder was integrated into the culvert to protect native aquatic life (taonga species) and preserve natural stream flow, honouring the sacred relationship between people and the environment.
- Community impact: The new culvert restores safe, reliable access for local farming families and services such as milk tankers, school transport, and emergency response.
- Sustainability: The large-diameter HDPE pipe used is highly durable and resistant, ensuring long-term performance and reducing the need for frequent replacements.
